Family Law in Harris, Chattahoochee, Talbot, Marion and Taylor Counties

Quick answer: Harris, Chattahoochee, Talbot, Marion and Taylor counties share the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit with Muscogee County, so divorce, custody and support cases in all six follow the same circuit standing orders on mediation, financial affidavits and parenting seminars. Cases are filed with the Clerk of Superior Court in the right county, usually where the other spouse lives (O.C.G.A. § 19-5-2). Harris County’s courthouse is at 102 N. College Street in Hamilton. Scot Sikes handles family law cases in all six counties from his Columbus office.

Not every family near Columbus lives in Muscogee County. Hamilton, Pine Mountain, Cusseta, Talbotton, Buena Vista and Butler are all part of the same judicial circuit, and many Fort Benning families live in Harris or Chattahoochee County. This page collects the local details that matter when a family case is filed in one of those counties.

One Circuit, Six Counties

The Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit serves Chattahoochee, Harris, Marion, Muscogee, Talbot and Taylor counties. The same Superior Court judges hear cases across the circuit, and the circuit’s standing orders apply in every county:

  • Domestic relations standing order (Ex Parte No. 2025-229). Automatic mutual restraints when a case is filed, a financial affidavit and child support worksheet at least five days before any hearing or mediation on money issues, and mediation in most contested domestic cases.
  • Parenting seminar order (Ex Parte No. 2024-204). Parents must complete an approved seminar within 31 days of service, and a certificate is required before the case is finalized.
  • Self-help. The Chattahoochee Family Law Information Center assists people representing themselves in all six counties.

Which County Is the Right One?

A Georgia divorce is generally filed in the county where the other spouse lives. If the other spouse lives outside Georgia, it can be filed where the filing spouse lives, as long as Georgia’s six-month residency rule is met. A person who has lived on a Georgia military post for a year may file in a county next to the post (O.C.G.A. § 19-5-2). Most of Fort Benning lies in Muscogee and Chattahoochee counties, which is why many military divorces are filed in Columbus or Cusseta. Custody, legitimation and modification cases have their own venue rules; see our legitimation and custody pages.

Harris County

Harris County is home to families in Hamilton, Pine Mountain, Cataula and the north Columbus suburbs. Its Superior Court sits in the historic 1908 courthouse in Hamilton, about 25 miles north of Columbus on U.S. Highway 27. Many Harris County families commute to Columbus or Fort Benning, which affects parenting schedules, school choices and how judges view relocation requests.

Chattahoochee County

Cusseta-Chattahoochee County is a consolidated government, and much of the county is Fort Benning. Military divorces, AR 608-99 support issues and deployment-related custody questions come up constantly here. See Fort Benning military divorce.

Talbot, Marion and Taylor Counties

These smaller, rural counties have lighter dockets, but the same circuit judges and standing orders apply. Hearings may be scheduled around the circuit’s calendar, so plan for travel and confirm the hearing location on your notice.
